Black and grey realism tattoo of peony flowers with leaves and a small bee on the upper arm.

Black and grey peony and bee on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two large peony blooms with layered petals and shaded leaves sit across the upper arm, with a small bee in flight above them. The linework is fine and the shading builds soft greys and deep blacks to give the petals volume. The composition is a loose cluster that wraps around the arm, set against a softly blurred background.

Dear Nell,

The bee got into the marquee before the judges did. It came in past the tent flap at ten past seven, while Mr Ashdown was still fiddling with the pins on his double red, and it went straight for the bloom Dad had carried down from the glasshouse in a bucket of cold water like a christening. Nobody swatted it. Mrs Pargeter just stood there with her clipboard held up like a shield and said, "Well, she's got better taste than the rest of us."

Dad won the peony class. Second was Ashdown, which he will be insufferable about until Christmas. The judges said the petals on the winner had the depth of something painted, all those ruffled layers folding back on themselves, the centre going dark where the light couldn't reach. I didn't tell them the trick was leaving it in the cool shed overnight so it opened properly. Dad never tells anyone his secrets. He just lets them see the results.

The bee stayed on the rim of that bucket the whole afternoon. When the prize card went up, it lifted off and went out under the flap into the sun, over the car park and the cricket field, and I watched it until I couldn't tell it from the dust.

Dad says we should plant three more of the white ones along the south wall before the frost. I said yes. Come up at the weekend and help me dig, and bring the good trowel, the one you borrowed in April and never gave back.

Love, Jo
