Neo-traditional mandala flower with grey petals, teal rings and green leaves on the lower leg.

Dark floral mandala on a lower leg

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A large mandala-style flower sits at the centre, with grey petals, pale yellow and cream centre petals, and teal and brown scalloped rings. Dark green and brown leaves spread around the design, and small eye-like motifs sit between the outer petals. The linework is bold and black, with soft shading in the grey petals and muted colour throughout.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you with the wet sandals, and let the lamp keep its oil a while longer. I will tell you about the courtyard of the nine gates in Sidon, which was not a garden at all but a walled yard where the rich kept one black flower alive in a clay bowl. Its petals were the colour of old ash, and the gardener who tended it had a single rule: never let the morning sun touch the centre, for the centre was where the watching lived.

Every petal carried an eye, the old ones say, small and round as a pomegranate seed, set in a yellow crescent like a moon caught in a net. The eyes did not blink. They counted. A merchant's wife who tried to pick the flower found the next morning that every coin in her house had been turned face down on its shelf, and nobody could say who had turned them.

Now, the gardener's daughter was clever and bored and did not believe in counting. One dusk she carried the bowl up to the roof to show the stars what they were missing. She unpinned the petals one by one and laid them in a ring on the warm tiles, eight grey hands around the pale yellow heart. The eyes looked up at the sky and, for the first time in a hundred years, they blinked.

Then the leaves came. Green as river reed, brown as dried figs, they unrolled across the roof and down the stair, climbed the courtyard walls, and by morning the whole city wore them like a cloak. Nobody has since been able to tell the flower from the leaves. Her father said she was never seen again. But I have seen the eyes, my friend, painted above the doorposts of every house in Sidon. Count them if you like. I never could finish.
