Black and grey peony tattoo on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A bride in a strapless lace gown and a floral crown leans forward while another person helps fasten her dress. A large peony design with bold outlines and shaded petals covers her shoulder and upper arm. The image is warm and soft, with the tattoo in dark ink against pale skin and a cream background.

Dear Tom,

The Pemberton order came in on Tuesday, eleven watch cases for a shipping line, each one wanting a peony on the lid. Mr Hale says the peony is for luck and that sailors like a flower that doesn't drop its petals in salt air. I told him sailors like nothing that doesn't stink of tar, but he didn't laugh. I have been cutting the outlines all week with the fine graver you left behind, the one with the cracked handle, and I find my hand is steadier on the petals than it was on the leaves.

The trick, I have found, is in the shading. You don't fill a petal, you let the line thicken where the petal curls under, so the eye believes in the fold. I did one for practice in the corner of the ledger, and Mrs Ashworth from the post office saw it and asked whether I had drawn it from life. I said I had drawn it from memory of a garden wall in Hull, which is true enough. Your mother's peonies were the ones that flopped over the path every June.

I am sending this one with the enclosed sheet, the best I managed, traced in ink on tissue so it will not crease. Keep it folded in your log if you like. When the Marigold docks, count the petals on the page against the ones on your watch chain, and tell me which of us has the steadier hand.

Yours, Alf
