Script tattoo down the upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind wears a sheer lace dress with a keyhole back and a blonde braided updo decorated with a white flower. A thin black cursive script tattoo runs vertically down the centre of her upper back, starting near the neck. The ink is black with fine, even linework, and the soft, warm-lit background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had shut the Harrow Pass for nine days when Mabel Oakes ran short of clean paper. Every guest at the Coldharbour inn had a letter to send and nowhere to send it, so she tore the blank pages from the ledger and kept writing. Her father mixed the ink from oak galls and soot. He said a letter written in that ink would not fade in a wet satchel, and that was the only promise anybody could make that winter.

The tinker who came in on the ninth night wanted only a few words. He was a thin man with a cough and a boot strapped up with cord, and he sat by the stove turning his hat round in his hands. "Tell her the road is clear in the spring," he said. "Tell her I'll come by the east fork and whistle the way we used to." Mabel wrote it down a little at a time, her pen running from the top of the sheet to the bottom, because the sheet was narrow and the words would not lie flat any other way.

When the thaw came, the tinker had gone out before dawn with his pack, and the letter went with him folded in oilcloth. Mabel heard nothing more until a carter brought word from the valley in May. A woman had stood at the east fork, he said, and whistled a tune back at nobody, then walked home singing it. Mabel kept the last scrap of ledger, where the ink had run in a thin line down the margin, the way water runs down a window when the frost lets go.
