Dear Nell, the Palais manager has finally let me take the portrait down from the cloakroom wall, so you can stop asking whether I've been hiding it from you. It is only a studio print of a singer who performed on Thursdays for two summers, a woman with pale curls piled up like sea foam and a drop earring that caught the lamps every time she turned her head. Mr Arkwright bought the print off a travelling photographer and hung it behind the coat hooks where the damp got in. Everyone who paid sixpence to check a coat looked at her first.

Something to tell you: last Thursday the band played its slow number and she was nowhere, and the floor kept waiting for her. Dancers stood about in their good shoes, pretending the music was enough. I went to the wall and stared at those dark lips and the starbursts behind her head, silver scratched into black card, and I thought the stars were the only thing in this building that never came late.

Then a boy in a borrowed suit asked me for his brother's hat, and I handed it over. He danced with his mother in the middle of the floor, slow and stiff, and she laughed so hard she had to hold his shoulders. That was the night I stopped waiting too.
