Realistic portrait of a woman with curled hair

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large realistic portrait of a woman's face with voluminous curled hair, shown in close crop. The shading is soft and smooth, with fine detail in the eyelashes, lips and hair waves, and the skin tone of the wearer shows through the lighter areas. The composition fills the frame, with the portrait sitting near the edge of the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Pellow sent me up the ladder the week before the summer fair, with a tin of gold paint and orders to make the lamp in his window look as if it had been lit since 1937. I was fifteen and thought the job beneath me. It was a face turned three-quarters to the lens, hair set in soft waves, drop earrings catching the light, and a dark mouth that looked as if it were about to say something unkind and then think better of it. There was a small mole on one cheek. The retoucher had wanted it gone. Pellow wouldn't allow it. "Anyone can make a face pretty," he told me. "The mole is what makes her look like she knows a secret about you."

Mrs Dunning from the wool shop came in every first Thursday to buy a print of it, paid sixpence, and never said a word to anyone. One autumn the frame in the window was empty. Pellow had sold the original to a man from Norwich who paid in cash and asked for the negative as well. I went up the ladder that evening to switch the lamp off and found the card backing still propped in the frame. On it, in Pellow's careful pencil, was a single dot where the mole should be, with the words *leave this alone* underlined twice.
