Pin-up woman in sailor top on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey pin-up woman with wavy hair raises one hand to her brow in a salute, wearing a sailor-style top tied at the front and a belt at the waist. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys for the skin and hair and strong darks in the uniform and belt. The figure fills the frame against a blurred camouflage-patterned background in orange, red and yellow.

The photograph had been taken on Saltmarsh pier the week before the convoy sailed, and by the time it reached the mess on HMS Culver it was pinned above three bunks, two kettles and a tin of boot polish. Nobody asked whose idea the salute was. Vera Lunt had thought of it herself, one hand flat to her brow against the wind off the water, the other gripping a sailor's cap she had borrowed from Frank Tully, who had shown her how to tie the neckerchief properly and then refused to let her keep it.

They had four days of leave before the Friday tide. On the third she walked him to the end of the pier where the fishermen mended nets and the gulls fought over crusts, and she made him promise he would not come back looking like the lads in the newsreels, all bandages and brave faces. Frank said he would come back with a tan and a tale. She said he had never had a tan in his life. He laughed so hard the gulls scattered.

He came back in October, not on the Culver but on a borrowed bicycle, one trouser leg pinned up over a wooden splint. The photograph was in his breast pocket, folded so often the creases had gone soft as cloth. He handed it over at the gate without a word, and Vera saw that the corners had been rubbed to nothing by a thumb, over and over, the way a man checks that a thing is still there.

She did not salute him. She dropped the bicycle in the hedge, took his good arm, and walked him home along the front with the sun in her eyes and nothing at all to hold it off.
