Black and grey rose behind the ear

Botanical · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A single open rose with curled petals sits behind the ear, with two leaves and a thin stem running down towards the neck. The rose is built from soft shading and fine linework, giving the petals depth and volume. The tattoo is shown in black and grey ink against warm skin, with the ear and dark hair framing the composition.

At ten to four the ovens were already ticking, and Nell Garrity had her hands in a bowl of dough when the back door banged. Her nephew Tomasz stood in the yard with a crate wrapped in a wet tea towel. Inside were the last roses from the bush against the bin store, the ones nobody had pruned since August. "Mam said you'd want them before the frost gets them," he said, and went back out before she could argue.

She didn't want them, not really. The bush had been her mother's, planted the year the shop opened, and it had grown leggy and thorny over the wall into the lane. Still, she laid the petals out on the steel table one by one, pale at the edges and darker in the cup. They smelled of something older than the flour. She thought about the cardamom loaf she'd promised the café on the corner and decided it could wait another hour.

By five she had a syrup going on the back ring, a little sugar and water with the petals steeped until the liquid turned the colour of weak tea. She strained it through muslin, brushed it over the first tray of buns as they came out, and watched the glaze sink into the curled tops. Each bun had a single crimped fold on one side, the way her mother used to shape them, so that from above they looked like small open flowers with a leaf of dough at the base.

When the light came up grey over the bins, Tomasz was back at the door with his hood up, asking if there was anything left. Nell passed him a paper bag, still warm, and found a single petal stuck to her wrist. She didn't brush it off.
