Small flower tattoo on the inner ear
Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo
A small five-petalled flower sits on the upper inner rim of an ear, with a clear round stone at its centre. The petals are outlined in black with soft pink shading that fades towards the edges. A stud earring and a hoop earring are visible on the lobe and lower ear, and the background is out of focus.

Dear Ruth,

The old damson at the bottom wall has finally given up its pip, and I have spent three evenings at the bench trying to make something of it. You'll laugh, but I have been sitting with the magnifying glass and a cup of cold tea, the same as your grandfather used to, waiting for the bud to show its colour. It is the palest pink at the very edge, deepening towards the heart, and in the middle sits a bead of gum the size of a lentil, clear as rain. Mrs Okafor from the allotments says it looks like a flower that has decided to keep a secret.
I have pressed one for you and tucked it inside this envelope. Mind the petals, they are brittle. The stamens have gone to dust, but all five edges still hold their shape, which is more than most of us manage after a hard winter.
I know you think the garden is a place you outgrew. Maybe it is. But the lease on the potting shed runs out in March and the new people want it for a cafe, so I have nothing to lose by asking. Come up on the first Saturday. Bring a spade and your own gloves, mine are full of holes. We'll plant the pip together, stone end down, the way your grandfather always said lets a thing root properly.
Love, Uncle Walter
