Feather tattoo behind the ear
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single feather is drawn in black ink on the skin behind the ear, angled downward with a curling stem at the top. The feather has fine, shaded barbs and a smooth gradient of grey, and the curled tendrils are drawn in a lighter, thinner line. Several metal piercings, including studs and a hoop, sit on the ear, and the soft background is out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The snow had shut the road over Scarrow Pass for nine days, and the innkeeper's widow, Ada Penhallow, was counting her candles when the stranger knocked. He carried no bag, only a grey quill tucked behind one ear, and he asked for a bed in exchange for a story. Ada had heard enough tales from carters to know what they cost, so she told him the bed was two shillings and the story was free.

He told her of a raven that lived on the highest crag and had lost the longest feather of its tail to a gale. Each winter it came down to the valley to ask the inn for a feather in trade, a single quill for a single night of warmth. The innkeepers before Ada had always given one, because a feather weighs nothing and a fire weighs a great deal. Her husband had refused the bird once, in the year the thaw never came, and the snow that followed buried two sheep and a boy from the mill.
Ada went to the drawer where she kept the loose feathers from her hens and chose one with a curl at the root, the kind a bird grows only when it has lost its way and means to find it again. She pinned it to the lintel above the door. By morning the snow had stopped, the road lay open under a blue sky, and the stranger was gone, though his quill lay on the hearthstone with its tip turned towards the pass.
