Black and grey rose covering a scar on wrist

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The left panel shows raised, pale scar tissue across the wrist and forearm. The right panel shows the same area covered by a large black and grey rose with shaded petals and green-grey leaves. The shading is soft and detailed, and the design fills the area with the rose head centred over the scarring.

Mind the step, that's the third board gone since the thaw, and don't sit on the good crate. Right. Where was I. Ah, the rose. Old Hannah Cutt's rose, up the lane past the mere, the one that climbed the cowshed wall the year her husband went through the ice on the far pond.

Nobody cut it back for nine winters. Brambles came through it, the wall went green with moss, and the frost got into every crack. Then the spring the Ferris boy came up with his grafting knife, and he looked at that wall the way a man looks at a bad hand of cards. He didn't pull the old canes out. He said he'd set a single bud over the worst of the damage, a little eye of new wood tucked into the bark, and let it take.

It took slow. The first summer nothing showed but a leaf the colour of wet slate. The second, a bloom came out so dark it looked grey in the lamplight, every petal shaded like the inside of a bell, and the whole head of it sat over the broken place as if it had been put there on purpose. Hannah stood in the lane with her apron to her face and said it was the first thing on that farm that had hidden anything without telling a lie about it.

So when you're out in the yard tomorrow and the wind's coming off the fen, and you see that bush over the cowshed door with its hips gone black, don't go pruning the lot. Leave a bud or two. Something will always want to grow over the old hurt, and the wise thing is to let it.
