Black and grey realism roses with swirling vine linework running down a lower leg and onto the ankle.

Black and grey roses and swirling vine on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Three shaded black and grey roses with leaves sit on a branching vine of bold swirls and tendrils that climbs the calf and continues down towards the ankle, where a smaller rose appears. The roses use soft grey shading and detailed petal edges, while the vine is drawn in solid black linework with curled flourishes. The photo is taken straight on against a dark grey background, with the design filling the frame.

The secateurs were still warm from Ada's hand when Tom took them, which meant she had been out since six, cutting dead wood from the Albertine that climbed the south wall of the Dunmore kitchen garden. He was meant to be sweeping the glasshouse path. Instead he knelt in the wet gravel and watched the vine behind the roses do what it always did, curling round every spare nail and doubling back on itself as if it had been told to keep something close.

"Take the cutting from the lower side," she said, not looking up. "The top wood's too soft. A thumb's length below a leaf joint, and no more, or it sulks."

He did it badly the first time and she made him do it again. The second cutting came away clean, a green stem with three leaves held out like open hands. She wrapped it in damp newspaper and told him what it would become, though he had heard it a dozen times already: the pale old rose from her mother's garden in Cheshire, carried south in a biscuit tin in 1961 and never once allowed to die.

Years later he took a cutting from that cutting and set it by the gate of a rented terrace in Leeds, where it spent three seasons doing nothing at all. He tied its first shoots to a wire frame, curling each tendril round the way she had shown him. When the first bloom finally opened, he went out in his socks to look at it, and he thought of the wall at Dunmore, and of how Ada had never once asked him to hurry.
