Black and grey rose tattoo on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large open rose with a smaller bud sits on the inner forearm, with dark leaves and a thin thorny stem curling down towards the wrist. The rose petals are shaded with soft grey gradients and fine detail in the folds, while the leaves use heavier black shading. The arm rests on a padded tattoo armrest against a white tiled floor, with the design filling the centre of the frame.

Three green leaves, a thorn no longer than a barley grain, and a bud the colour of a bruised plum, tight as a fist.

Her uncle had taken the slip from his mother's wall in Wapping before the tide turned. Keep it wet and keep it dark, he'd said, pressing the parcel into her hands at the dock gate, and it'll bloom where you put it. She had kept it wet. She had kept it dark in the bread locker when the mate went hunting for spirits, and she had kept it from the cook, who wanted the sawdust for his pipes.
Now the coast of Chile was a grey smudge off the larboard quarter. Nell cut the stem again, slantwise, the way her uncle had shown her, and dipped it in a tin of boiled seawater gone cool. The thorns caught the lantern light and drew small curls across her palm. She thought of the widow in Valparaíso who had written asking for a rose that could survive the wind.
Two days later the bud split along one seam, a petal lifting pale in the spray. Nell pinned the cutting to the rail where the sun could find it, wrapped the last dry strip of flannel around her own wrist, and for the first time since Wapping she sat down on the hatch cover and let the ship carry her.
