Black and grey rose on a neck
Realism · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose in full bloom, with its petals curling outward and several leaves beneath, is tattooed on the side of a man's neck. The linework is fine and the petals are shaded with smooth grey gradients and deep black accents that give the flower volume. The photograph is a close crop of the neck and collar against a plain light background.

Harold Quayle had grown roses on the allotment behind Ashgrove Terrace for thirty-one years, and every August he cut the best bloom for the Miners' Welfare show with his father's pruning knife. This year the knife was not sharp enough, and the bloom was a deep black-red that the judges had never seen before, nearly the colour of coal dust after rain.

Ada Pell, who kept hens two plots down, watched him fail to cut it clean. "You'll bruise the stem," she said. "Let me." She had hands like a farrier's, broad and quick, and she took the knife and sliced the stem at the angle he should have used decades back.
Walking to the hall, they passed the winding gear at Hollin Pit, its wheel silent since the shutdown in March. Harold stopped beneath it. The men who had worked the cage were in the photographs pinned up inside the welfare hall, grey-faced and grinning, and he had never once looked at them without thinking of the roses they pinned to their lapels on feast days.
The judge gave the rose second place. Harold did not mind. On the way home he gave Ada the bloom, not the ribbon, and told her the petals were the colour of the lamps the men carried down. She laughed at him and set it in a jam jar on her windowsill, where it opened slowly over three days until the outer petals curled back like paper, and the leaves beneath it stayed green.
