Rose with leaves on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large open rose with outlined petals and a tightly curled centre fills the middle of the frame, with several leaves wrapping around it. The petals use stippled dot shading and the leaves combine bold outlines with textured fill. The image is black and white, so the tattoo appears entirely in black ink and greys against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming sideways across the market since seven, and by ten the stallholders had stopped pretending the awnings kept anything dry. I kept my buckets under the trestle table, wrapped in old newspaper, because roses were the only thing I sold that weather could ruin in an afternoon. Dad always said a rose sulks if you handle it wet. I didn't believe him until the Tuesday Mrs Okafor came down the row asking for one bloom to take to her husband's grave.

She wanted an open one, not a bud, the kind that had given up holding itself together. I picked through the bucket for a long time. Most were too tight at the centre, curled like fists. Eventually I found one whose outer petals had folded back, showing the knot of its heart, dark where the damp had got in. I wrapped it in brown paper and tucked two glossy leaves beside it, and she counted out her coins on the wet wood without once looking up at the sky.

She came back the next Tuesday, and the one after, always asking for the open one. I started saving them for her before she arrived, pale pink at first, then deeper, then almost black at the edges as the petals spent themselves. I told myself it was only trade. Then one morning she stood under my awning shaking water off her umbrella and said, "You don't have to keep the good ones for me," and I found I had nothing to say.

The rain eased around four. I cut the last open rose shorter so it would fit the paper, laid it across the newspaper with its centre still held tight, and walked it down the hill myself before the lamps came on.
