Realistic rose on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose with a tightly coiled centre fills the shoulder, with broad petals and dark green-grey leaves spreading outward. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading, smooth gradients and fine highlights, giving a three-dimensional look. Partial Roman numerals sit along the neck and collarbone above the rose, and the photograph is cropped around the shoulder with white fabric at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The road out of Caddon Flats ran dead straight for forty miles, and the milestones counted it off in white paint, each one stamped with Roman figures the sun had nearly bleached away. By the seventh mile the old carrier Ned Sorrel had stopped complaining about the heat and begun talking to his mule instead. Mara sat beside him on the wagon board with a sack in her lap, the last of her mother's rose cuttings wrapped in wet cloth.

Nobody in Caddon believed a rose would take in that ground. The wind stripped the topsoil every spring and the wells went brackish by midsummer. But her mother had always said a rose wanted only one thing, which was to be planted where no one expected it, so at the eighth milestone Mara knelt in the grit with a trowel and dug a hole no bigger than her two hands.

Ned watched her pour water on it from the flask he kept for the mule. Three weeks later he came back along the same road with a load of salt and found the cutting had put out a red bud the size of a thumbnail, cupped tight as a fist, with leaves dark as river stones. He stopped the wagon and climbed down without a word.

He did not tell anyone in Caddon what he had seen. He told them only that the eighth milestone was the one place on the road where a traveller could get a decent drink, and that the water there tasted faintly of roses. Nobody asked him how he knew, and by the next dry season the whole road had learned to stop there.
