Mind the third step, you lot, it's gone soft as bread since the frost. Now sit where the moon can reach you. Good. This is the keep of Harrowgate, and the rose climbing the chapel arch was planted by a woman called Ysolde Penrith, who came up the hill the winter her brother hanged for sheep-stealing he never did.

She had no money for red petals. The castle had burned in the siege the summer before, so every stone wore soot. She went down to the smithy and begged a pinch of char from the quench trough, mixed it with rendered tallow and river mud, and painted the first bud on the chapel wall with a goose feather. The steward laughed at her. He said nothing grew on a wall that had been fired.

But the rose came up anyway, dark-leafed, the edges serrated like the teeth of the saw that cut her brother down. She shaded every petal with a thumb of ash so it held its own grey light. Each spring the steward walked past it, and each spring it was larger, until one March the whole arch was furred with bloom and he could not find the chapel door for the leaves.

He went to her that night to ask her to scrape it away. She was sitting on the altar step with her hands full of thorns, bleeding and content. 'Pull it if you like,' she said. 'It only grows where somebody remembers.' The steward lies in the crypt now, his name worn off the slab. But if you lay your palm flat on the chapel stone in the dark, you'll feel the petals, cool and grey, as if someone has only just finished painting them.
