Two outline roses on hip and thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A person lies on white bed linen wearing black lace underwear, with the torso and upper thighs shown and the face not visible. Two black outline roses with leaves sit on the side of the hip and the upper thigh, drawn in single even lines with no shading. The design is in black ink only and is framed by the soft, pale bedding and the lace waistband.

Mrs Okonedo had kept the rose cutting in a jam jar on her windowsill for eleven months before she pressed it into Dev's hand on the fourteenth floor, and he never asked her why. He carried it up the stairwell because the lift at Hadley House had been broken since March, and the stairs at least didn't smell of something left to rot. Water slopped over his trainers at every landing.

The balcony faced the car park and the old gasworks beyond it, where a crane stood still against the grey like a question nobody wanted to answer. Dev had a plastic tub of compost and a trowel he'd borrowed from his brother and not yet returned. He set the stem in the soil and firmed the earth with his thumb, the way his mother used to smooth a plaster over a graze, then sat on an upturned crate and waited for something to happen.
Nothing happened for three weeks. He watered it at night so the pigeons wouldn't fight him for the puddles. Then one morning a bud pushed out between two leaves, tight and pale as a knuckle, and by the weekend it had opened into a cup of petals with the edges folded back like a page someone had been reading too hard.
He took a biro from the kitchen drawer and drew it on the back of a council letter about bin collections, one unbroken line for the bloom and another for each leaf, without lifting the pen. When the lift was fixed at last, he rode it down to the ground floor and pushed the envelope through Mrs Okonedo's door, and the roses on the balcony above him kept opening in the wind.
