Tiger and lotus on a thigh

Japanese · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo covers the outer thigh, showing a black and grey tiger partly wrapped around the leg, with a pink lotus flower blooming above it. Blue and white wave and cloud shapes fill the background and flow down towards the knee. Soft, moody lighting and a dark sofa behind the leg keep the focus on the colours and the tattoo's bold outlines.

By the time you reached the sluice gates of Vanthe, the river had already begun to climb the steps of the lotus house. Old Corin Tealey was up to his knees in brown water, shouting for boats, and the bronze tiger on the pier was the only thing in the kingdom that did not seem to care. You had been told as a child that the beast was cast from the same flood that drowned the first village, and that it turned its head each time the water rose past the old mark.

You waded out with the rope over your shoulder. The lotus pond behind the palace had never flooded before. Its blossoms sat on the surface like pink lanterns, and the wave-patterned tiles beneath them were slick with silt. Corin said the Queen's gardeners had shut the pond gates to save the paintings in the east hall. You knew better. The gates were shut so the water would rise where nobody could see it, and you had one hour before the clouds over the hills broke open.

You tied the rope to the tiger's iron ring and felt the cold metal answer with a low hum. Its shoulders were heavy with striped muscle, and its tail curled along the pier as if it had swum all the way from the mountains. When the sluice finally groaned open, the pond drained in a long, orderly sigh, and the lotuses settled onto the mud like sleepers turning over.

Afterwards Corin asked what you had said to the beast. You told him nothing. The next morning, though, you found the gate's padlock lying on the bottom step, its key bent into the shape of a wave, and the tiger's head had turned a finger's width further towards the palace than it had been the night before.
