Black and grey rose with leaves on the thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose with shaded petals and several leaves and stems extends across the outer hip and upper thigh. The linework is bold and dark, with soft grey shading on the petals and leaves that gives the flower depth. The rose sits near the centre of the frame, with the trailing stems fanning out to the left and right against smooth skin and a navy waistband.

The generator coughs twice before the lights on the Waltzer catch, and by then you have already counted the paper roses on the rail of the coconut shy. Eleven. The same eleven as Tuesday, their wire stems wrapped in foil that throws the sodium glow back at the field. Nobody in Hallow Green buys paper flowers at a fair, which is why you keep them, and why you keep the one at the end with the grey smudge where the rain got into the crepe.

Tomasz from the dodgems comes over at half nine with grease on his cuffs and a pound coin he has been turning over in his pocket all evening. He wants a rose for his mother, who is in the caravan with the blinds down and has not been out since March. You tell him the grey one is the best. He looks at it a long time. The petals are shaded darker at the folds, as if the flower has been opened and closed again, and the leaves trail off the stem in sharp points that look ready to catch on a sleeve.
He doesn't take it straight away. He asks what it would cost to have one drawn properly, on card, the way the old sign-writer used to do in the booth before the council shut the field gate. You say you don't know, that you only sell what's left over. Then you lift the rose off the rail, straighten the foil, and hand it across anyway, because the rain has made it lovely and nobody else is going to want it.
By the time the caravan lights go out you are folding the tent. On the walk back to the wagons you see him stop under the one working lamp, hold the flower up against the dark, and tilt it slowly until the shadows on the petals catch.
