Black and grey roses with pearls on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Four roses are shown in soft, shaded greys with dark leaves, and a strand of pearls hangs in loops around them. The shading is smooth and layered, with strong highlights on the petals and deep shadows where they overlap. The design is arranged vertically along the side of the thigh and fills most of the frame, with a pale grey wash behind the top rose.

Dear Ruth,

The rain has stopped at last, so I can hear the gulls again over the slipway. Mr Aldous at the chandlery sent the roses up from the glasshouses in Penzance, four of them, wrapped in wet newspaper like something smuggled. I have put them in the blue jug on the windowsill where the light comes off the water, and the dark leaves are already curling at the edges, the way the old ones do when they have decided to be beautiful for one more day rather than lovely for a week.
Mother's pearls are still in the drawer. You will say I should have sold them when the boat went down, and perhaps you are right, but Father bought them the year the herring came back, and I could never make the sums come out to a price for that. This morning I strung a few on cotton from my sewing box and hung them over the back of the chair to see how they looked against the wallpaper. They looked like something a woman would wear to a dance she did not want to go to.
The thing I really wanted to tell you is about the artist who came over from Plymouth on Thursday with a lamp, a tin of ink and a sketchbook full of roses. Every one was shaded grey as the sky before snow, the highlights left bare on the petals, the shadows pressed in where one bloom tucked under another. I asked her why she did not paint them red. She laughed and said black was the only colour that did not lie about the shadows, and that red was for people who had never had to hold still for four hours.
Write back soon, and tell me whether Hal has kept the boat in the water or only talked about it.
Love, Margaret
