Black and grey roses on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of three roses with shaded petals and several leaves covers the outer thigh, with one large open rose at the centre and smaller blooms on either side. The outlines are bold and the petals are built up with soft grey shading and darker recesses. The image is a close crop with a plain brown background and denim shorts at the top edge.

Your grandfather never planted a rose in his life, so when the frost came down on the Hollins farm that January, nobody expected the three bushes by the byre wall to bloom at all. Ada Brennan swore they were the same roses her mother had carried from the old rectory garden in a tin bucket, and that the bucket had been dropped in the Ouse, and that the roses had simply refused to die. Folk laughed at her in the Crown, but they came out to look.

The snow lay thick that week, and the blooms were heavy and grey in the lamplight, every petal shut tight against the cold like a fist that would not open for money or for love. Ada's brother Tom went out with a hook to cut them back before the thaw, and he came in with his coat frosted white and his hands bare and bleeding from the thorns. He said the roses had turned their faces toward the house, as if they were listening, and that one of them had a shadow on its heart like a bruise.
He cut none of them. Instead he sat by the range until the kettle boiled dry, and in the morning the wall was bare except for a single open bloom at the centre, pale as a moth, with leaves gathered at its feet like a skirt. Ada wrapped it in brown paper and carried it down the lane to the station, and she never told anyone where it went. The thaw came early that year, and the bushes never flowered again.
