Black and grey roses and daisies on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two large roses, one at the top and one at the bottom of the forearm, with three daisy-like flowers between them. The petals are rendered with smooth gradients, fine shading and soft highlights to create depth. The image is entirely in black and grey ink against a blurred wooden background.

Dear Tom,

The wholesale market was loud again tonight, the lorries backing up over the cobbles by the canal, and I thought of you because the big roses came in stacked in wooden crates, the same grey-brown slats as the pallets in your yard. Mum would have hated the smell of diesel mixed with the sweetness. I stood under the sodium lamp and counted them the way Dad used to count the takings: forty-two dozen, all black at the edges where the cold had got in.

Remember the daisies Mum kept along the fence on Cardigan Road? Nobody bought those, she grew them for the bees. Tonight a man from the florist on Briggate asked for three bunches of them for a wedding nobody had planned properly, and I found I didn't want to sell them. I wrapped them myself in brown paper and wrote the card, and then I stood there like an idiot with the scissors in my hand.

The night shift ends at five. I walked the long way back past the river, where the lights go pale on the water, and I thought about how you said the roses were too much, all those layers of petal folding in on themselves, and how I told you a rose is only honest when it's hiding something. You didn't laugh. I still haven't decided if you were right.

Come home at Easter. I'll keep the middle crate for you, the one with the frost-burnt bloom at the top, and we can see whether it opens by the time you get off the train.
