Dark botanical blackwork on the back of a hand

Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown from the back, covered in a dense black and grey tattoo of large stylised petals or leaves with a central rose-like bloom. The forms mix solid black fill with fine stippled dotwork and delicate linework that fades into lighter skin at the edges. The composition is tightly framed on the hand, with the design wrapping over the knuckles and onto the fingers against a white paper background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rose came up through the glasshouse floor the week Mr Pell lost his temper with the boiler. Nobody had planted it. Father said it was a sucker from the old Dutch stock, but the stems were the colour of wet slate and the bloom sat low, its petals folded over one another like the pages of a shut book. He told the Society it was a fine specimen and asked me to draw it before the frost.

I worked at the bench under the north window with a quill and a pot of Indian ink, building shadow the slow way, one dot at a time. Stippling is patient work. A single petal can take an afternoon, and the trick is to let the dots thicken towards the fold and thin out where the light finds the edge, so the paper seems to breathe. Mrs Hale, who did the lettering, said I was wasting my eyes. I told her the rose did not like to be looked at in daylight, and she laughed and went home.

I stayed late on the Thursday with one lamp lit. The bloom had opened a finger's width while I wasn't watching, and the fine black petals had gone the deep, wet dark of a rook's wing. I dotted the last outer leaf and felt the lamp warm against my cheek, and when I looked up, the glass beyond the bench had frosted white. The centre of the plate was still bare paper. I had not been able to bring myself to fill it in, and the rose, I think, had been waiting for me to leave it open.
