Black and grey roses on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three roses in full bloom, one large open rose at the centre with two smaller roses and buds tucked behind and above it. Fine shading builds soft petal edges and deep shadows, with small highlighted droplets sitting on the petals and leaves. The design is rendered entirely in black and grey ink and fills the shoulder and upper arm, with the person's back visible behind it.

Her father's roses were still in the front garden, black-leaved in the wet, and she could see them from the landing window, bowed under their own weight.

He had planted three of them the summer she was born, one big yellow-centred bloom and two shy ones that never quite opened. Every year he said the same thing about the shy ones, that they were waiting for permission. Ada had stopped believing him around the time she stopped believing in most things he said. Still, she went down the garden path that morning with the secateurs in her coat pocket, meaning to cut the dead heads before the storm finished them off.
The big rose had opened overnight. Its petals were heavy and grey in the thin light, and water sat in beads along every fold, catching what little sky there was. Ada crouched in the wet and watched a drop slide off the edge and fall, very slowly it seemed, onto the leaf below. She left the secateurs in her pocket. Behind the house the bucket was still ringing with the rain from the roof, steady as a clock, and for once she was in no hurry to go back and empty it.
