Realistic red rose with watercolour wash on shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large red rose in bloom dominates the shoulder, with a closed bud and two green leaves rising to its upper left and right. The petals are rendered with smooth, blended shading in crimson, pink and deep red, with fine darker detail at the centre. Loose purple and brown watercolour-style washes spread behind and below the flower, and the photograph is taken from a close, slightly angled view.

Sit down, sit down, you've been driving since the pass and your eyes have gone to glass. Right. The rain came to Calder Wash the year my father buried his second mule, and nobody believed it had rained at all, because the sky only opens in this country to make a point. But it did. Three hours of it, brown water running fat down the gullies, purple dust gone to mud and then to a stain that dried on the rocks like a bruise going off.

Out of that stain came the rose. Not a desert rose, mind, those are only sand and salt pressed flat by the wind. This was a proper red rose, the kind a town keeps in pots behind a chapel wall. Nobody planted it. A rancher's daughter called Ines swore she saw it open at dawn, crimson at the heart and paling at the edges as if dipped in milk, with a bud leaning off to one side as though it had something to say to the road.
She sat on the verge with a thermos and waited for the rest of the town to drive out and see. They came in their trucks, and each one stopped, and each one went quiet, and then each one wanted a cutting for their own yard. Ines said no to every one. You don't pick a thing the rain has finally decided to keep.
So that's why the old road bends there, round the wash instead of through it. Mind the shoulder. The flower's still down there, I'm told, if you know where to look once the light goes orange.
