Pink rose and anchor on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A pink rose with shaded petals sits over a grey anchor, with twisted rope wrapping around the stem and the anchor's shank. The linework is bold and dark, and the rose uses soft pink and white shading for a more realistic look. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame on the upper arm, with a tiled floor and a salon chair blurred in the background.

The gatekeeper at Salt Weir had one rule for everyone who crossed the marsh bridge: you declared one thing you could not put down. Most said a debt, or a dead mother's name, or the sound of a particular bell. Tobias Hale, who had walked the wet road with brine in his boots, said only that he carried an anchor.

Ada Penrose made him show it. It was grey iron no bigger than a loaf, wrapped in tarred rope, and it dragged at his shoulder as if the ground wanted it back. 'That is a holding weight,' she said. 'Nobody crosses my bridge carrying a ship's ground unless they say why.'
So he told her. Ten winters before, in a squall off the point, he had cut the cable of his father's boat to save the crew who clung to the spars. The boat went down with his father still aboard. Tobias had kept the anchor ever since because he could not bear to sink it, and he could not bear to set it down either.
Ada listened, then tapped the rope with one finger. 'Tie it to the post, then. The toll is paid when the thing is held by something that grows.' He did. That night the marsh water rose over the causeway, and by morning the anchor lay sunk to its shank in the mud, while a single rose stood on the post, pale at its edges and dark pink at the heart, its stem bound in the same tarred rope.
