Black and grey roses with swirls on the side
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows two roses, one large in the foreground and a smaller one behind it, joined by curling black vine linework. The roses use smooth grey shading with soft highlights on the petals and small droplet-like highlights on the largest bloom. The design runs diagonally across the side of the torso, just above the waistband of dark jeans.

The swirls were the trouble. Every curling tendril he cut seemed to bend back toward the far corner of the garden, where a second bloom, smaller and older, had been sulking under the hedge since the war. He'd known the ground there was wet. He had not known the roots ran under the lane to the churchyard, nor that the stone angel by the gate had its wings wrapped round them the way a hand shelters a candle.
On the last evening he sat on the wall with a cup of tea gone cold and watched dew gather in the big rose's petals, each drop holding the last of the light like a bead of mercury. He understood then that Mrs Ashdown had never meant the garden to be tidy. She had planted two roses so neither would have to face the dark alone.
