Shaded roses down the side of the hip

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of realistic roses in black and grey shading runs diagonally from the side of the ribcage down over the hip and upper thigh. The petals use fine linework and soft gradients to show depth, with leaves filling the gaps between the larger blooms. The person's face is not visible, and the photo is framed closely on the tattooed skin against a pale, sheer white fabric.

The kiosk on Platform Four shuts at nine, but the roses never do. You have been stacking buckets since six, pale ones at the front, the deep crimson wrapped in brown paper at the back where the draught from the concourse cannot reach them. Mr Okafor, who runs the newsagent next door, calls them funeral flowers. You tell him they are for people who forgot to ask first.

The man in the grey overcoat arrives on the 19:42 to Crewe with ten minutes to spare. He asks for the roses that are going over, the ones with edges curling like old receipts. You tell him they will not survive the journey. He says he is not taking them far, only to the bench by the footbridge where his sister used to wait for the milk train. He pays in coins, counting them twice onto the glass.

You wrap them the way your grandmother taught you, one fold at a time, so the stems stay dry in the damp. He does not thank you. He holds the bundle against his chest like a sleeping cat and walks towards the footbridge, and you watch the paper turn blue under the sodium lamps until the stairs swallow him.

Next morning the bench is empty, but someone has laid a single bloom along the rail of Platform Four, its petals already bruised by the wind. You pick it up and set it in the bucket with the others, the one still closed tight, still promising to open.
