Two roses and a bud on the lower abdomen
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two open roses with a closed rosebud on the left, surrounded by shaded leaves and curling fine line vines. The petals are rendered with smooth grey shading and dark recesses that give them depth and volume. The design fills the centre of the frame, with a navel piercing and pink waistband visible around it.

Come closer, the lot of you, and mind the gravel, because my knees are not what they were when Mother Ivy ran this wall. You want to know why the Harrow sisters never sold their roses at the market? Because they grew two that would not open for anyone but the one they were meant for. The old gardener, Tobias Crane, swore he'd cut them down with his shears before he let a single bloom go to the church fete. He said they had a temper.

There was a bud on the left, tight as a fist, that sat for three summers and never once showed its colour. The girls talked to it, sang to it, even put a bent sixpence in the soil beneath it for luck. Nothing. Then one wet June the two big roses on the right leaned into each other across the trellis, petals heavy with rain, and the bud began to loosen at the edge like a letter being unfolded by careful fingers.
By the morning of the flower show it had opened, and the whole village came to see. Crane stood at the gate with his cap in his hands and said nothing at all. Pinned to the rose on the left, where the stem had been bent over the sixpence, was a small brass key that none of the sisters ever claimed. They say it still opens the shed. I've never tried it. I'd rather the roses kept their secrets, same as they always have.
