Black and grey roses with vine down the ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three roses, two open and one in bud, with leaves and a rose bud climbing a central vine. The roses are shaded with soft grey tones, while the leaves and swirling tendrils are drawn in bold black linework. The design runs vertically along the side of the torso, with the largest rose sitting low near the hip and the bud near the upper ribs.

Every spring Hanna Coyle walked the rows of her father's nursery at the top of Pilgrim's Lane with a bucket of wet sacking and a knife she kept sharp enough to shave with. The frost had taken the low beds that March, so what was left grew up the south wall, where the old brick held the warmth. Three plants stood there that had never been sold, because her father had grafted them himself and would not say for whom.

The first was a bud still closed tight, pale at the tip, the sort that opens late and hopes nobody is watching. The second was already open, loose at the edges, its petals curling back as if embarrassed by their own size. The third was the largest, sitting low by the drain where the soil ran rich, and the ledger named it only "for Mr Fenn, when he comes back from the sea." Hanna had never met Mr Fenn. She knew the stock had come in a tin with a Dutch stamp on the lid, packed in wet moss.
One grey morning a man in a navy coat came up the lane, shoulders dark with rain, and asked for roses by name. He did not look at the wall. He looked at the drain bed, then at the ground, as if reading a letter he had written long ago. Hanna cut the big rose free, wrapped its roots in sacking, and handed it over without a word about price. He turned it in his hands, found the leaf with the small notch his own hand had once drawn in the margin of a seed order, and smiled for the first time.
"It took, then," he said. He paid her in coins spent in three countries, and she watched him walk back down the lane with the rose held out before him like a lantern. The bud on the wall stayed closed. Hanna left it be. By the next spring it had opened on its own, unhurried, the way roses do when nobody is holding the knife.
