Black and grey roses on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two roses on a stem with leaves and thorns, one large open bloom lower down and a smaller bud near the top. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading and dark outlines, giving them a fairly realistic dimensional look. The roses are in black ink with grey tones on warm skin, and the composition follows the curve of the thigh with a hand visible at the bottom edge.

The cuttings had gone grey at the tips by the third week, but Mirela would not throw them out. She kept them in a jam jar on the sill of the potting shed at Hollin Reach, where frost came off the moor early and the glass ran wet every morning until noon.

The rose had no name in the valley, only the one her grandmother gave it, Vell's Dusk, a bloom that opened once a year and only for whoever cut the stem at the right slant. Its petals were shaded like smoke held against a lamp, its thorns close and cruel, and above the open head sat a single bud, closed tight, as if it had not yet decided whether the season was worth the trouble. Mirela had grafted that bud onto a briar by the gate three winters running, and each spring the briar sulked and died back.

Lord Ansel's steward came up the track in March with a purse and a list of demands. The lord wanted the rose for his daughter's wedding, cut and carried to the chapel at Greywater by Saturday. Mirela told him the bloom would open when it chose and not a day sooner. The steward left the purse on the bench and came back at dusk with two men and a saw.

They found the big bloom cut at the stem on the Friday, but the bud had gone over the wall into the briar and taken root there. On Saturday morning, when the bells started at Greywater, the briar at the gate was covered in dark roses that smelt of rain. The steward stood among them with his hat in his hands. Mirela, drying her palms on her apron, said nothing at all, and the jam jar on the sill began to bloom.
