Black and grey skeletal sleeve on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The left panel shows a bare upper arm with pale, raised, textured lines across the skin. The right panel shows the same arm covered by a black and grey tattoo of a skull-faced hooded figure with clawed hands and ornate detailing. The shading is smooth and realistic, with strong contrast against the dark background.

The band at the Ferrier Pier Palais stops mid-waltz because the man in the grey coat has come in off the sea wind, and nobody saw him pay at the door. You are still turning with Mercy Lowe, the seamstress from Hull who cuts her own fringe, and she squeezes your hand hard enough to hurt. He has been asking for the girl who sings the last number, she says, and you are the only one in the hall who has never once sung.

He takes your hand before you can refuse. His fingers are long and cold, the nails curved like a man who has spent his life climbing rigging, and he does not ask you to dance so much as begin dancing, leading you into a step that belongs to a tune nobody is playing. Above you the chandelier dims one bulb at a time. Beneath the hood of his coat the bone face tips towards you, patient as a clock, and the other couples drift to the walls, their faces turned in the way people turn from a station platform when the train is late.
He tells you the bargain was struck on a chalkboard in this very room, years ago, by a woman who wanted her husband home from the trawlers. One dance for each year of her life, and this is the last of yours. You could sit down. Instead you lift your chin and tell him the floor is yours, and you count the beats aloud until the band starts again, badly, from the wrong bar.
By the final chord the hall is empty but for two chairs and the smell of salt. The bandleader swears he saw the man in the grey coat fold himself into the dark by the doors, and that the floor under the bulbs held only one shadow, long and bright, stretched out towards the pier.
