Black and grey sleeve with snake and camera
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a woman with shoulder-length blonde hair, arms crossed, showing a full arm sleeve. The sleeve includes a scaled snake coiling across the forearm, a camera, and a tattooed portrait of a woman's face. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast between the dark ink and light grey tones.

You learn the camera before you learn the nets. Skipper Tom Reddall keeps it in a tobacco tin under the wheelhouse bench, a folding bellows model with a cracked leather hood, and says nobody points it at anything while the Marigold is working. So you wait for the grey hours off the Dogger, when the trawl is down and the sea lies flat as pewter, and you take it out to photograph the gulls riding the wake.

The hawser coils by the winch like something asleep, its tar and rust scaled over in a pattern the mate swears is a serpent's back. Every morning you rub salt from its links with your thumb and think about the herring, silver-scaled and slithering across the deck until the whole boat shines like a fish. Nobody on the fleet talks about the woman in the photograph pinned above the compass, the one with a curl of tape gone brown at the corners.
Her name was Nell, the mate tells you, and she sailed as a deckhand the year the engine failed and they limped home on sail and prayer. Wound inside the bellows you find one exposure never developed. In the galley, with the blind drawn and a dish of chemicals borrowed from the chandler, you watch the image rise through the liquid: the harbour wall at dawn, and a girl with a camera raised, squinting into a lens that is pointed right back at her.
When you pin your print beside hers, Reddall says nothing. He lifts the kettle off the ring and pours a second cup, and the two of you watch the sun come up over the Humber's grey mouth while the net comes in heavy and full, scales flashing in the light.
