Tattoo sleeve and hand piece with rose

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a woman with long dark hair, one hand raised near her lips and a ring on her finger. A dark ornamental tattoo covers the back of the raised hand, and a black and grey sleeve with figurative and floral elements runs down the left arm. On the right forearm, a shaded rose and a small script design are visible against a pale background, with a teal top and black bra strap in the frame.

The rose was the last thing Ada cut before the works closed, a shaded bloom no wider than a thumbnail on the lid of a pocket watch. Outside the skylight Sheffield had gone the colour of wet slate, and the trams stopped ringing one by one along Division Street until only the furnace hum was left.

Tobias Quayle had brought the watch in wrapped in a handkerchief the colour of weak tea. It had stopped at twenty to midnight, he said, and would not start again, though he had taken it to three men before her. Ada opened the case with a thin blade and found a vine of ornament running round the inner rim, leaves cut so fine they caught the lamplight like scales, and beneath them a line of script in a hand she knew better than her own.

She had learned copperplate from her father's ledgers. The line read: Come back before the roses go over. It was dated the spring before he sailed for the coast and never returned. She sat with the loupe pressed to her eye until her shoulders ached, then set the file down and wiped the brass clean on her cuff.

When she finally wound the watch, the hairspring trembled and took up its small, stubborn count. Quayle had paid in advance and gone home. Ada left one petal of the rose unfinished on purpose, and carried the watch out into the dark to find the man who had written the line.
