Black and grey tattoos on arm, torso and thigh
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a woman reclining in a black crop top and black briefs, with her face not visible. A full-arm tattoo of ornamental, shaded patterns covers the upper arm and forearm, and a dark ornamental piece sits across the ribs below the top. On the thigh, a group of birds and a dreamcatcher are rendered in black and grey shading against bare skin.

Dear Tom,

The geese went over before it was light again, so I know the frost has got into the low field and Dad will be swearing at the pump. I stood in the yard with the bucket and counted them until the sky gave up its grey. Forty-one. You always said I could never count birds in flight, and I still can't, but I got close enough to annoy myself.
Mam's dreamcatcher is still hanging in the back kitchen window, the one she wove from willow the winter you left. The web inside has gone brittle, and a starling got tangled in it last week. I cut it free with the good scissors and it flew straight up into the rafters of the barn, shaking frost off its wings, and I thought, well, that's one thing the net did right. Her quilt is still on the settle too, the rosette patterns faded where the dog sleeps on them.
I sold the ewes at the November fair. Mr Pargeter gave me a fair price, though he didn't look at me once while he counted the notes. I've put the money in the tin under the stairs and started on the list you asked for. Fence posts first, then the hinge on the top gate, which has sung every morning since you went. It is a terrible noise. I think of it as yours.
Come home at Christmas if the roads are clear. There's a space at the table, and I'll set the tin on it so you can see what you're missing.
Love, Jess
