Wing and feather tattoo on thigh and hip
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A person lies on white bedding, seen from behind, with a large tattoo running down the back of one thigh and across the hip. The design appears to show layered feathers and wings in fine black linework with soft shading, and a lace waistband partly covers the hip. The composition is an intimate close crop with the legs and feet visible at the top left and the tattoo as the main focus.

The frost had got into the water trough again, and Nell broke the skin of ice with the heel of a hoof pick while her grandfather argued with the hayloft door from the far side of the yard. "It's stuck because it's cold, not because it's wrong," he called, which was what he said about most things in January.

Inside, the barn smelled of straw and diesel. The barn owl had roosted in the rafters all winter, and Nell had counted its pellets on the feed bin the way her teacher used to count spellings on the board. This morning there was only a scatter of grey-white feathers across the bales, each one barred faintly with black, and one lay on the lid of the grain bin, long as a letter opener, its edge combed perfectly straight, as if someone had run a comb down it.
She climbed the ladder with the feather pinched between her fingers and the cold coming up through the rungs. The loft was empty except for a hollow in the hay where the owl had pressed itself through the nights, and a single pale wing-tip caught in a nail. She stood there a long time with the door banging below and her breath going up in clouds, listening for a sound that didn't come.
That evening she pinned the feather to the kitchen calendar, over the square marked with a ringed date for the first thaw. Her grandfather looked at it, then at her, and said nothing about the door, which was the kindest thing he had said all winter.
