He said it was grey as ash on the wet timber, with a horn like a bone needle and a mane that dripped water onto the rails.

The men who were pulled up had no words for it that the chapel would accept. They said only that a horse had stood on the landing, lifted one forefoot, and the cage had shuddered free of its chain. Then the smoke came off its flanks in long ribbons, grey and slow, the way steam leaves a kettle, and it went back down the shaft and was gone.
