Black brush stroke down a back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single bold black brushstroke tapers from a thin, feathered top to a ragged, dry-brush tail, running diagonally down the side of the back near the spine. The ink is solid black with a few grey streaks, and the stroke edges show texture and skin tone through the lighter areas. The left photo shows the full back with a belt and jeans at the bottom, and the right panel is a close crop of the stroke and a small mole beside it.

Brother Anselm was sent up the mountain path with a brush, a stone of ink and one sheet of rice paper, because the abbot said the valley had sent word that the river was turning. Nobody in the valley could say how a river turns, only that it did, and that the millers had stopped sleeping.

He knelt on the cold flags of the scriptorium and thought about the river all night. Before the bell he wet the brush, pressed it to the stone until the hair was full, and drew one stroke down the page. It came out thin at the top, where his wrist had been light, and swelled as he leaned into it. Then the ink gave out, and the bristles dragged dry across the paper and tore into little teeth at the bottom. He looked at it for a long time, the way you look at a sum that has come out right by accident. Then he rolled the sheet, tied it with flax, and carried it down the path with the sun on his back.
He pinned the scroll under a flat stone on the bank where the river bent. The old miller came out with a lantern, found the mark black against the pale paper, and held the light close to it without speaking. Then he laughed, because the river had bent exactly as the brush had bent, and the water had already begun to slide along the line the ink had drawn.
Anselm climbed back up the path in the dark. By the time he reached the gate the millers were sleeping again, and the river ran on down the valley, following a stroke that nobody had asked him to make.
