Raven in flight on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A large raven with spread wings is shown in flight across the side of the torso. The bird is rendered in dense black fill with fine feather strokes along the wings, while soft grey smoke-like shading surrounds it. The composition follows the curve of the ribs, with the bird's head and beak near the middle of the image and the wings sweeping up and down.

You have counted the bird's wingbeats for eleven winters from the hut at Sallow Gate, where the road crosses the ridge and the line of white posts runs off into cloud. Nobody else at the post bothers to look up. The raven comes in low over the wire each dusk, always heading east, always with something dark in its beak that you have never been close enough to name.

Tonight the snow is coming sideways, and the lorry driver in front of you has a boot full of cheese he swears is only cheese. You wave him through. Then the raven drops onto the barrier arm and does not move. Its feathers are slick with sleet. When you lift the lamp it opens its wings the way a sail fills, and the whole ridge goes black behind it, as if the mist were being pulled off the hills by a hand.

The rule is simple: nothing crosses after the bell. But the bird holds your gaze with one flat eye, and you find yourself lifting the arm. It rises, takes the smoke of the valley with it, and goes over the posts without a sound. Behind you the lorry's engine coughs and the radio says your name twice, hoarse with static.

In the morning the cheese is still in the boot, and a black feather lies on the sill of the hut, as long as your hand. You put it in your pocket and wait for dusk, because you have worked out what it wants. Every night it carries something across, and every night someone like you decides whether it is allowed.
