Brush-style wolf head on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A man's bare upper back shows a tattoo of an animal head, likely a wolf, facing left with its muzzle lifted. The design is built from loose black brushstrokes, ink splatters and dry-brush streaks that fade out toward the lower edge, with a few faint reddish specks. The image is a close, straight-on view of the back against a wooden shelf in the background.

The ink had been ground since before the bells, and Ada still had soot to her wrists when the wolf first shifted on the scroll. She had climbed the hill to Mr Okonedo's loft with a jar of lamp black and a list he would not write down himself. He was asleep by the stove, his spectacles folded on his chest. The painting hung from the beam above the bench, a few loose strokes that became a head with its muzzle lifted, and the splatters around it were still wet enough to shine.

She thought it was the draught at first, the way the paper lifted at its edge. Then a black drop slid from the wolf's ear, hung for a moment, and landed on the floorboards with a small, clean sound. Another followed, and another, each one a pawprint trailing toward the door. "Don't let it reach the snow," the old man said without opening his eyes. "It has never once been asked to stay out there."
She reached for the thin brush he kept for corrections and drew one dry stroke down the wolf's flank, the kind that fades before the paper ends. The creature rolled its head, shook loose a spray of ink across the ceiling, and dropped from the beam in a rush of wet strokes. By the time Ada looked up, the door was swinging on the wind and the paper held only a faded smear where the wolf had been.
Mr Okonedo sighed and opened his eyes. "Now you grind the next one," he said, and handed her the stone. Her wrists were black to the elbow, and at the base of her thumb sat a neat print, four toes and a pad, that would not wash off for a week.
