Black cat with swirl motifs on a calf
Japanese · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black cat stretches down the back of a lower leg, with a second cat's head and paws at the bottom of the design. The black ink has pale, swirling highlights and cloud-like motifs, with soft pink and purple wash shading around the outlines. The design follows the curve of the calf and fills most of the frame against a plain, light background.

The last train had already gone from Ashiyama when Haru found the cat asleep on the signal box steps, stretched the full length of the stairs as if someone had poured it there. Her uncle had warned her about the station cats. Some were only cats, he said, until somebody counted their tails. This one's tail curled up past the handrail and out of sight, and above it there was nothing but dark sky and the faint grey smudge of the shunting engine's smoke.

Mr Tanaka, who had run the junction for forty years, told her the old stationmasters kept a black cat so the signals would never lie to them. The cat walked the rails after midnight and set the points by stepping on them, and in return it was fed fish from the lamp-room tin. Haru had not believed him until she saw the markings on its flank rolling like cloud, pale swirls lifting out of the black as the lantern moved. At the foot of the steps a second cat sat with its grey-striped face turned toward the platform, watching her the way a clerk watches a ticket that might be forged.
She had a ticket for the morning train to Osaka and nothing else. The cat rose slowly, bent its back, and went down the steps one paragraph at a time, each stretch longer than the last. Haru followed with the lantern. On the empty platform the signal lamp changed from red to green for a train that was not coming, and the cat sat at the edge of the track and waited, tail lifting in the smoke.
In the morning the steps were bare. Mr Tanaka handed her the timetable without a word, and there in faint pencil, beside the 5:12 to Osaka, someone had written her name.
