Colourful cartoon creatures on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A forearm sleeve of cartoon creatures drawn with bold black outlines. The turtle-like figure at the lower edge and the round, yellow-eyed creature near the centre are filled with blue, purple, orange and green. The composition is crowded and fills the forearm from wrist to elbow, with some areas left as outline only.

Nobody on Ferrier Lock had ever seen the tortoise Hobb sell anything, which was why the creatures came to him. They queued along the towpath before the bells, the fox-cat with her pink ears swishing, the purple grinner that smelled of wet pennies, the small bird with the orange waistcoat who could not sit still. Hobb took their coins in a tin with a hazard badge painted on the lid, and he never once asked what they wanted it for.

Dottie was the round blue one with yellow eyes, and she was the only creature who ever argued with him. "You're charging the bird double," she said, rolling a pebble under one foot. "He's skinnier than last week." Hobb pulled his head in, then out again, and counted the coins twice. "Skinny birds have longer journeys," he said. Dottie laughed so hard the sparks came off her back, and the fox-cat told her to stop before the lock keeper saw.
The trouble came on the evening the water went green. Nobody could say who had let the barge sink, but by morning the tin was gone and the bird was perched on the gate, shivering. Hobb sat in the mud for an hour, shell cold, saying nothing. Then he stood up, walked to the middle of the towpath, and began to count out loud: every name, every coin, every debt he had ever let slide.
By dusk the whole queue was back, and the tin was full again, though nobody could say who had put the coins in. Hobb tapped the lid with a claw. "Double," he said, and for the first time all year, Dottie did not argue.
