Black silhouette tattoo of a creature with pink inner ears and a trailing tail of small star dots on the outer upper arm.

Black creature with a star trail on the upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a creature with pink-purple inner ears and small wing-like shapes sits on the skin, with a tail that curls back across the arm. A loose trail of small star shapes and dots in red and blue runs from the creature up and away towards the top left of the frame. The skin is lightly lit against a plain background, and the image is a close, angled view of the arm.

The third night running, the cat would not come down from the lamp tower, so Mrs Pell sent her nephew up the iron ladder with a dish of pilchards and a lantern that smelled of paraffin. Tomas made it as far as the gallery before the wind found his collar. Ottoline sat on the rim of the glass with her tail curled round her feet, her ears lit pink from the inside, watching the bay as though it owed her money.

Nobody in Scarrow had noticed her going out at first. The trouble began in the autumn, when the fishing fleet was still out past the Gannet Rocks and the stars came down over the harbour thick as spilt salt. Mrs Pell swore the cat had been pulling them out of the sky by their tails, one after another, and dropping them over the roofs. Wherever she passed, the slates were speckled red and blue, and the gulls would not land on them.

"Come on, then," Tomas said, and held out the fish. Ottoline looked at the fish, then at him, then dipped her head and let him cup one of the little lights in his hand. It was cold as a sixpence and buzzed like a moth against his palm. Below them the boats were coming in, one lamp each, and he understood that she had been lending them the sky so they could find the harbour mouth.

He carried the cat down under his coat with the star held against his ribs. In the morning the trail was still there across the rooftops, faint as chalk. Mrs Pell counted it from the step and said there was one short. Tomas said nothing. The star was in his pocket, still warm, and when Ottoline wound round his ankles he gave her the fish and kept the light, and she let him.
