Black cat on a branch with red berries
Other · Mixed · Photo
A black cat sits upright on a thin branch that curls into a spiral at its base. The cat is filled with solid black ink that has a speckled, sparkly texture, while the tail and branch use soft grey shading with fine outlines. Small red berries and leaves line the branch on the right, and the spiral is outlined in bold black line.

Dear Nell,

Mrs Okonedo's cat has moved into the back bedroom without asking anyone, and I have stopped pretending I am the one who feeds it. It arrived in the rain on Tuesday, black as the inside of a coal scuttle, and sat on the sill as if it had paid the rent. Its coat catches the streetlamp in little specks, as though someone has flicked glitter over it from a tin.
The rowan at the end of Cable Street has been fruiting early, and every night I come home past the railings with my feet aching, and there it is, sitting upright on the lowest branch with its tail hanging down, watching the bins. The branch curls at the root into a tight spiral, like a fern unfurling or a clock spring left out in the weather, and the cat behaves as though the whole arrangement was made for its benefit. Last night I put out a saucer of milk and it ignored me, then came down the drainpipe and drank the lot while I was looking the other way.
Mr Halloran from the chemist says it belongs to nobody, which is what people always say about the cats that choose you. At the market an old man selling pears just shrugged and said the wise ones pick a window and wait for the right person to be stupid enough to leave it open.
Tonight the sill was empty and the saucer was clean. I stood on the step a long while looking up at the branch, and the berries had gone, every one of them, stripped clean in a single night. I think it has gone home. I hope it has. Write soon, and tell Dad I am eating properly.
Love, Ruth
