Black fern frond tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a forearm and open hand held out against a blurred, muted background. A single fern frond is tattooed on the forearm, with its stem angled toward the wrist and its leaflets drawn in solid black ink. The image is shot in soft natural light, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Mrs Penrose kept the boarding house on Marrow Terrace the way she kept her ledgers, with every page ruled and nothing allowed to wander. You had come in October, when the season was over and the sea wind had the wallpaper lifting at the seams, and she gave you the room at the top of the stairs because it was the only one with a window that shut properly. The fern lay pressed between two sheets of blotting paper on the sill, brown at the edges. She told you it had come from the cliff path above Porth Hallow the summer her husband died, and that you were not to move it.

You did not move it. You moved the chair instead, angling it to the glass so the grey light fell across the frond while you sat over the lodgers' accounts. Each morning the tide came in under the fog and went out again, and each morning you counted the same eleven coins in the tin on the landing, because Mrs Penrose counted them too and the numbers never once agreed.
On the Thursday the gull that had nested on the chimney stack went silent, and a man in a wet mackintosh asked for a room he could not pay for. You gave him the back bedroom and said nothing about the tin. That night you found the blotting paper torn and the fern on the floorboards, its leaflets dark with sand and damp where the ink had rubbed against the wood.
Mrs Penrose came up the stairs one step at a time, her hand on the rail. She picked the frond up, shook the grit from its leaflets, and laid it back between the sheets as though nothing had been disturbed. Ferns, she said, were here long before anyone thought to count anything, and they had no great need to be kept. Then she asked you to fetch the tin, and you went down to find that the eleven coins had become twelve.
