Feather outline on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single feather is drawn in thin black outline, with its central shaft and a few internal lines suggesting barbs. The quill ends in a small diamond shape, and two tiny dots sit near the base. The design is set on pale skin against a plain light background, with the hand visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Marguerite, the stationmaster at Carrow Junction has finally agreed to let me keep the lost property drawer open past six, so I am writing this at the ticket hatch with the kettle going behind me. You will laugh, but the thing I was most afraid of losing on the Penzance train was not my suitcase. It was the little brass nib you gave me, and I found it this morning wedged in the seat cushion, quite unbothered, as if it had only stepped out for a minute. The porter said a gentleman had sat in that carriage with a notebook and drawn all the way to Exeter, and that he had tried to shape the spare quill of a goose into a pen and given up.

I asked the porter whether anything else had been left. He pulled out a damp feather from under the bench, grey at the tip and pale at the spine, its barbs combed neatly flat. He had kept it because it was the only thing on the carriage floor that was not a crisp packet. I told him I would take it to the lost property office, and he said that was the sort of thing a person says when they intend to keep it. He was right. I have it now, pinned inside the lid of my writing case, and I have been tracing its outline with a pencil for an hour, pressing hard at the shaft and lightly at the barbs.

The diamond at the quill's end is the part I cannot get right on paper. I keep making it too round. When you come up in the spring, bring your sharp compass and show me how you would close it. I will bring the feather. We can compare it against the one I have drawn, and then decide between us which of the two is the true copy.

Your loving friend, Hester
