Shaded feather on the wrist
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single feather is tattooed diagonally across the inner wrist, with its quill running from the lower left to the upper right. The feather is rendered in black and grey with fine dark outlines, soft shading along the vanes and a lighter highlight on the shaft. The shallow focus blurs the fingers and background, keeping the tattoo as the sharp focal point.

The wind at Sallow Gap takes your hat before it takes anything else, so you tie your collar down with twine and keep walking. The letters are in oilskin against your ribs, eleven of them, addressed in three different hands to the valley below. Your uncle swore the pass would be clear by Thursday. Your uncle has sworn a great many things from the warmth of the kitchen at Cwm Dû.

Halfway up the scree you find a feather wedged point-down in a crack between two stones. It is a flight feather, dark at the tip and grey toward the quill, its vanes split where something sharp has pulled through them. You should leave it. Instead you work it free and turn it in your fingers. The shaft is pale and sound, and the barbs lift when you breathe on them. A jay, perhaps, or a raven from the cliffs. You slide it into the oilskin with the letters, because a runner who has carried the post for nine winters learns that signs are cheaper than maps.
At the cairn on the crest the cold has turned the sky to blue glass. Someone has pinned a note under a stone, in round careful writing, asking whether the post still comes over the top or whether the mountain has swallowed the postman. You read it twice. Then you take out the feather and lay it across the stone with its quill pointing down the slope, the way the wind is going, so the next person to climb will know which way the path bends.
Going down, the letters are lighter by one feather. Far below, the lamps of the valley are coming on in a line, like someone counting you home. By the time you reach the bridge, the feather is only a dark shape on the grey stone above you, and the wind, having nothing else it can take, leaves it there.
