Black floral vine tattoo on the chest
Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two flower heads joined by curling vine stems and scroll motifs, running diagonally from the collarbone area towards the centre of the chest. The linework is bold and solid black with some fine swirl detail, and the design has no shading or colour. The skin is photographed close up in warm light, with a pink lace bra and a pendant necklace visible at the edges of the frame.

Dear Nell,

You'll laugh, but I've spent three days on my knees in the Starlight Rooms with a tin of black enamel and a brush I bought for skirting boards. Mrs Pryce wanted a vine across the sprung floor, running from the bandstand steps to the middle, with two flowers at the joints. No shading, no colour. She said the dancers needed to read it under the lamps from the balcony, and I think she's right, because the lines are so bold you can't mistake them.
I drew the scrolls freehand first, curling off the stems like bracken, then tightened them with a compass so the spirals matched. Each flower head has five pointed petals, the way Mam used to cut paper stars for the tree. The fine swirls at the top took the longest, a dozen little hooks no thicker than a hair, and I nearly cried when one smudged and had to be painted over.
On Saturday a girl in a yellow frock stopped mid-foxtrot, looked down, and followed the vine with the toe of her shoe, from one flower to the next. Her partner kept going and bumped into the bandstand. She just stood on the second bloom, laughing, as if someone had finally told her a secret the room had been keeping for years.
I've left the last scroll at the far end unfinished. Mrs Pryce says it's bad business, but I want there to be room for somebody to add a petal of their own.
Yours in enamel fumes, Joan
