Crescent and swirl ornament on a hip
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large ornamental design in dark blue-black ink curves across the hip and upper thigh, built from a crescent moon with scalloped lace-like edges, spiralling swirls and a vertical chain of small ornaments. The linework is fine and even, with dotted lines and tiny dot clusters forming the beaded strands that fall from the crescent. The skin tone and warm sunlight sit around the design against a striped woven mat, with the subject's midriff and bikini bottoms visible but no face shown.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mara Ledger carried the moon-cloth in a tin trunk through three counties after the tent went, because nobody else would take the weight of it. It was a crescent of blue silk, scalloped along the lower edge like lace, with glass beads sewn in strands that fell from its horns almost to the floor. Old Tobias had worn it on the high wire, and when he died in a boarding house in Shrewsbury nobody thought to bury it with him.

The show had shrunk to one caravan, a goat called Duchess, and a ring of straw in a field outside Tamworth. The farmer's wife paid a shilling a head to see the girl who could walk the rope. Mara had no rope left, only the moon, which she hung from the hawthorn each evening so the beads caught the last of the light. Children stopped at the gate to watch the drops swing and tick against each other like a clock that had forgotten the hour.
One evening a stranger in a grey coat asked what it was worth. "Nothing," said Mara, "unless the wire holds." He offered twenty pounds, enough to pay the farrier and buy the goat a new bridle. She told him the moon was not for sale, only for walking under. He laughed and left, and in the morning the field was white with blossom and a wire ran between two elms, strung by someone who had not been asked.
She climbed at dusk. The beads chimed on the way up. From the top the whole county looked like a lit ring, and far below the farmer's wife held up a lantern and the children stood in a row with their mouths open. Mara stepped out over the grass with the crescent behind her, and for the length of one breath the show was full again.
